The skeleton with the flaming arrow fired at Banjo, hitting the sorcerer for a total of 10 damage between the arrow and fire. Banjo moved to the far left corner and fired at the zombie on the left. The arrow hit but did not seem to bother the undead. Jean took a five foot step forward and hacked at the zombie with his handaxes. The range scored one blow for 8 damage. The farthest skeleton fired at Clint with its short bow. The rogue took 2 damage from an arrow. Clint moved down the stairs and into the chamber to the right. The rogue fired at the zombie on the right but missed. The last skeleton fired its short bow at Blunderbuss, striking the barbarian for 4 damage. Torvald took a five foot step to the right and Power Attacked the zombie there. The paladin’s longsword dealt 12 damage. Thurstan’s wolf maneuvered to the right to flank the zombie. It snapped with its jaws but missed the undead. Thurstan stepped forward and attacked the zombie with his trident. The cleric landed a blow for 5 damage as the attack was not as deadly on the zombie as it would have been on a living opponent. The zombie on the left swung its limbs at Jean but missed the ranger. Blunderbuss took a five foot step forward and power attacked the right zombie with his greataxe. The barbarian landed a mighty blow, laying the zombie to rest once more.

Suddenly, the corpse on the nearby table swings its arms at Torvald, missing the paladin with its attack. Moaning accompanies another corpse’s shifting from its resting place and shambling toward him. A clattering comes from deeper in the room. The first zombie is a middle aged man with graying black hair and a long mustache, apparently Morgan Yurling. The second is an old man with a bald head and a long white beard.

The clattering comes from animated skeletons that round the corner from the passage to the east. All are unarmored, and each wields a bow and has a quiver at its hip. The skeletal archers have arrows nocked, and one of those arrows is swathed in flame.

The surprise round is over. Roll initiative and prepare for combat.

Thurstan channels energy, healing Torvald to full and his wolf by 4. As the wolf is still wounded, the cleric also casts a Cure Light Wounds, restoring it to full. Thurstan and Torvald move the bodies of the sentinels into the mausoleum, arranging them in a dignified manner. Both holy men say a few words over the dead.

Banjo looks around the mausoleum, seeking signs of the arcane but he finds nothing. He even examines the tomb with a Detect Magic. Blunderbuss recovers from his rage. Jean listens to the door but he does not hear anything. Clint examines the door and the lock. He does not find anything out of the ordinary. The elf pockets the keys left hanging from the lock.

Thurstan tries the far door. It is unlocked. Behind it, a narrow staircase descends fifteen feet to a wide landing below. You can tell the landing leads to a wider room that is lit by wavering firelight. The cleric steps aside and allows Torvald and Jean to take the lead as the party descends the stair.

Lit torches illuminate this chamber. From the landing you now stand upon, a shallow staircase leads down into a room obviously designed to allow corpses to be prepared for burial. At the bottom of the staircase is the corpse of a human woman, crumbled and broken. The statue of some winged celestial being overlooks the scene from its pedestal east of the stairs. Several tables stand against the east and west walls, and all but two of the seven have corpses on them. Farther into the chamber is a long pile of crushed stone where somebody or something toppled and crushed two of the tables. Aside from the one table that is beyond the debris, the farthest features you can see are vault doors along the north wall, a couple of which hang open, exposing the rudely tousled bones within.

Torvald steps onto the mausoleum floor to examine the body of the woman. She appears to have been bludgeoned to death. From the description received in town, the body appears to be Desiree Yurling.

On the steps of the mausoleum, the two bodies, seemingly savaged by some wild beast, lie in a pool of blood. One is a male dwarf, and the other is a female human. Each wears the remnants of a town sentinel’s tabard. Blood spatters cover the landing and the flagstones just inside the tomb’s doorway.

The doors of the mausoleum open to reveal a large stone room containing a stone table and several vaults built into the walls. Across the room you see a closed stone door. Blood is splattered and smeared on the table, walls and floor.

Jean is able to tell from the blood trail that the bodies were dragged out of the mausoleum, presumably by the wolves. The signs of battle reveal that the sentinels fought a battle inside the mausoleum. They did not fight the wolves but rather enemies using bows and bludgeoning weapons. A trail of blood leads back into the mausoleum all the way to the closed door in the rear. A set of keys rests in the lock.

Thurstan is able to validate the ranger’s findings. Dornal, the dwarf, was bludgeoned to death and Zeera, the human, was shot with arrows. The arrow shafts were broken off when the wolves dragged and began to eat the bodies.

Clint made a shot with his longbow on the worg. The arrow landed and dealt 9 damage. The worg attacked Torvald again but missed the paladin. The remaining wolf snapped at Thurstan but missed. Blunderbuss continued to rage, took a 5-foot step and power attacked the worg. The barbarian landed a mighty blow with his greataxe dealing 26 damage, killing the monster. Thurstan pressed the attack on the wolf between him and his wolf. The cleric hit with his trident for 11 damage, killing it too. Jean looked around for more danger but no targets were apparent. Torvald made sure that the worg was truly dead by running his sword through the monster.
