Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 12

The group enters the mausoleum to resume their task, picking up at the eastern door. Clint re-examines the door but finds nothing new. Torvald opens the door to reveal the passageway beyond.

This passage has the statue of a human woman set in a niche on the northern wall. She is dressed in robes, and her arms and face are held upward as if toward the sky. On either side of her, fountains gurgle with what appears to be fresh water. The passage smells like rain.

Directly across the hall from the statue is a closed stone door, and father down the passage is an archway on the northern wall. Beyond the that archway , grave vaults like those you’ve seen before occupy all sides of the passage. Many have been opened and apparently looted.

The group agrees to Ian’s offer and immediately begins making preparations to leave. Thurstan gathers everyone around and says a prayer over the dead and a blessing for the living. During the prayer, the cleric channels positive energy and heals his wolf, Banjo and Blunderbuss for 4.

After the group agrees to continue their investigation of the mausoleum, Banjo asks about the history of the graveyard and the mausoleum. He does not learn much new but Gran Stoutbrace reminisces about his ancestors who lived in the mountains to the north back before the silver played out, many, many years ago. He remembers hearing a story from his father talking about a series of tunnels under the nearby hills.

Torvald asks Ian for an advance on the completion of the mission. The innkeeper respectfully declines. The paladin takes his reward to buy some equipment. He also takes the shortbows to sell. The paladin fetches 45 gold for the bows and buys the supplies that he was looking for. When he meets up with the group, he hands out 7 gold coins and 5 silver to each member.

Clint seeks out the local cleric, Hergon Hilltopple, in search of holy water. Hergon is a cleric of Pharasma, goddess of fate, death, prophecy and birth. Apparently he is the only cleric living in town since the cleric of Sarenrae, goddess of the sun, redemption, honesty and healing, passed away and her acolyte moved to a larger congregation. He is usually shunned by the townsfolk but they will go to him in times of need for assistance as he is the only healer in town. The cleric has several holy waters for sale and is glad to arm the rogue against the undead, giving an extra vial above what Clint purchased.

When all preparations are made, the party departs. Once more they head north into the hills to the Kingsholm graveyard and the mausoleum within.

After paying each of you, Ian Turbrand speaks, “I’ll pay you each an additional five times the 50 to go into the mausoleum and catch or destroy whoever or whatever defiled the place. That’s a total of 300 gold pieces each for the deed.”

Do you accept the offer?

The skeletons each carried a shortbow and 10 arrows. There are also 4 magic +1 flaming arrows. The short bows can be sold for 45 GP while in town. The arrows, magic and mundane, will be added to the party treasure inventory.

Is there any other business while you are in town?

By this point the Mage Armor spells have expired. It is around dinner time and it will grow dark within a few hours.

Tyra refuses to look at any of the bodies. She is clearly in a state of shock and wants desperately to get out of the tomb. Torvald takes her into the fresh air and the sun. The girl continues to cry. After she has cried herself out, Banjo is able to get her to reveal some details of what she remembers.

She, her mother and her father were preparing her grandfather for burial. Suddenly there was a load bang and monsters rushed into the tomb. Immediately they attacked. She heard her father shout and her mother scream. She ran and hid, trying to conceal herself in an empty vault. There were large humanoids that that appeared to be in charge. they shouted some things in a language that she did not understand. Quickly afterward some smaller humanoids slid the door over the vault where she was hiding and began to nail it shut. Based on the girl’s descriptions, Clint and Jean figure that the large humanoids were hobgoblins and the smaller were a type of goblin-kin known as varags.

Collecting the dead farmers and sentinels, the party heads back to Kingsholm with the survivor. It is a short walk back to town but the pace is slow given the burdens.

The mood at the Coronet and Cabbage is somber with the news. The townsfolk are glad to know the fate of the missing but horrified to hear how they met their end. Ian Turbrand thanks you for your efforts so far and the safe return of Tyra. As promised he pays each of you the 50 gold that had been previously promised.

Examination of the vault door in the northwest corner reveals that it has been spiked shut with some care. The door is somewhat ajar allowing air to pass through. It takes just over a minute for Thurstan, Torvald and Blunderbuss to free the spikes and remove the door.

Cowering within is a human girl who can only be Tyra Yurling based on the description received in Kingsholm. When she sees that the group are civilized races, the girl rushes into Torvalds arms burring her head to his breast and begins sobbing. She is terrified and in an obvious state of shock.

Banjo is able to determine that the sources of magic are 4 arrows carried by the skeletons and the 5 torches that light the mausoleum. He identifies the arrows as +1 Flaming arrows and the torches as Everburning Torches.

The remaining skeletons are frightened and attempt to move away from Thurstan. Frightened did not mean helpless. The skeleton on the right attacked Blundrbuss with its claws but missed the barbarian. It then moved to the corner. Banjo cast a Detect Magic spell. The sorcerer sensed magic auras upon all five torches and the quivers of the three skeletons. Jean attacked the skeleton in the corner hitting with one of his handaxes but doing no damage. The remaining skeleton attacked Jean hitting with one of its claws for 5 damage. Clint moved to the east door and examined it. The elf determined that the door was unlocked and appeared to be untrapped. Tracks in the dust suggested recent traffic through the door. Torvald moved forward to attack the skeleton with an overhand chop power attack from his longsword. The paladin hit for 16 damage and destroyed the skeleton. Thurstan’s wolf bit the undead for 2 damage and tripped the monster. Thurstan stepped forward and delivered 3 damage with his trident. Blunderbuss stepped into the open square and power attacked the remaining skeleton with his greataxe. The barbarian shattered the skeleton in the corner with a hit for 16 damage.

Combat is concluded.

The center skeleton fired its shortbow at Banjo but missed the sorcerer. It stepped to the left. Banjo cast an Acid Splash on the center skeleton, hitting for 1 damage. Jean moved to the skeleton on the left to engage it in melee. The ranger noticed that the lower vault door leading to A1 is slightly ajar and is spiked closed from the outside. The skeleton dropped its bow and attacked the ranger with its claws. One of the undead’s attacks struck home for 3 damage. Clint moved around the corner and examined the area to the east. He determined that the door was closed and that there were no additional enemies visible. The right skeleton dropped its bow and attacked Torvald with its claws. The monster missed with both attacks. The paladin returned the attack, hitting with his longsword. The blow was mighty but not as effective against an undead foe, dealing only 10 damage. Thurstan’s wolf maneuvered to attack the skeleton on the left but missed with its bite. The wolf caught the scent of a living human behind the lower vault door leading to A1. Thurstan channeled positive energy from Gozreh healing Banjo, Clint, Blunderbuss, Jean and his wolf up to 5 while damaging the skeletons. The skeleton to the right was destroyed and the other two took 5 damage and became frightened of the cleric. Blunderbuss moved forward to engage the remaining skeletons. The barbarian missed with his mighty greataxe.

The center Skeleton fired its shortbow at Torvald and missed the paladin. It stepped back to the north wall. Banjo moved forward and cast Mage Armor on Thurstan’s wolf. Jean attacked the zombie with both handaxes but missed. The left skeleton shot its shortbow at Blunderbuss and missed. It moved back to the north wall and to the right. Clint moved forward along the right wall using the tables as cover. The right skeleton shot its shortbow with a flaming arrow at Thurstan’s wolf. The arrow hit the wolf for a total of 10 damage between the arrow and fire. It moved back to the north wall. Torvald moved up to melee range with the right skeleton. Thurstan’s wolf moved to flank the zombie. It attacked with its bite, dealing 3 damage and tripping the undead. Thurstan attacked the zombie with his trident. The cleric landed a blow for 5 damage. Again the attack was not as deadly on the zombie as it would have been on a living opponent. The zombie lashed out at Thurstan from the ground but missed. Blunderbuss moved forward and attacked the zombie with the greataxe. The attack landed and the dealt 17 damage, killing the zombie.
